Preparing Your Home's Electrical System for Winter
October 14, 2026
Winter in Southwest Iowa and the Omaha metro leans on your home's electrical system harder than any other season. Space heaters run for hours, holiday lights fill every outlet, and ice storms and high winds go after the lines that keep it all running. A little work before the first hard freeze heads off tripped breakers, fire hazards, and a multi-day outage. Here is how to get ready.
Start with an Electrical Panel Check
The panel feeds everything in your house, and winter is when it works hardest. Breakers that trip over and over, a panel that feels warm, or a burning smell near it all mean it is being pushed past its limits. Homes on older fuse boxes or 100-amp service often struggle once the heating loads stack up.
If your panel is dated or you have added major appliances over the years, get it checked before winter. We can measure your capacity and recommend panel upgrades ahead of the season's heaviest demand.
Use Space Heaters Safely
Portable heaters cause more winter electrical fires than almost anything else. A few rules:
- Plug a heater straight into a wall outlet, never a power strip or extension cord. Those overheat.
- Keep at least three feet of clearance from furniture, curtains, and bedding.
- Run one heater per circuit so you don't overload it.
- Buy models with automatic tip-over and overheat shutoff.
If one room keeps tripping a breaker every time you plug in a heater, that circuit is probably overloaded or undersized. Worth having it looked at.
Inspect Outlets, Cords, and Holiday Lighting
Before you string up lights, take a few minutes to check for frayed cords, cracked insulation, and warm or discolored outlets. Use outdoor-rated extension cords for exterior displays, plug outdoor decorations into GFCI-protected outlets, and don't chain cords together. Overloaded circuits and damaged cords start a lot of winter house fires, and nearly all of it is preventable.
Protect Against Outages with a Backup Generator
Ice storms, heavy snow, and winter winds cause most of the long outages around here, and they hit when losing heat is most dangerous. A whole-home standby generator watches your utility power around the clock and switches on within seconds of an outage, keeping your furnace, well pump, refrigerator, and sump pump running until the grid comes back.
Bluffs Electric is one of the few contractors in the region that specializes in backup power, and we handle the whole job of generator installation and backup power. Fall is the time to put one in, before the storms arrive and the schedule fills up. Already have a generator? Book generator service and maintenance now so you know it will start when you need it.
Don't Forget Surge Protection
Winter storms and the power swings that come with outages can push surges through your wiring and damage electronics, appliances, and HVAC equipment. Whole-home surge protection installed at the panel guards everything at once and pairs well with any generator or panel upgrade.
